Text:   From his pension file, we learn that Matthew was living in Chester County, South Carolina when he volunteered in the spring of 1780. He served under the Command of Lieutenant Houston and Colonel Sumter. His service began at Indian Lands near the Catawba River, A small company of volunteers marched from Indian Lands to a place called Hanging Rock near the Catawba River, where early in the morning they attacked and defeated a company of Tories who were commanded by Colonel Bryan. The British soldiers were encamped about half a mile away and they made an attack on the volunteers who held their ground until evening. Then the volunteers left and marched to Bigger's Ferry on the Catawba River. At this place, the volunteers were attacked by the British forces and Matthew was severely wounded in the head and taken prisoner by the British troops. He and the other prisoners were taken to Charlotte in North Carolina, and confined in jail. Then they were sent to Camden in South Carolina and there confined in a prison for about 10 weeks. Then he was sent to Charleston to be put aboard a prison ship. On the way, about 16 miles from Camden, he and the other prisoners overpowered the guard and made their escape. About 2 weeks after his escape he again entered the service as a volunteer under Colonel Sumter. This time, the volunteers took a British Garrison about 3 miles south of the Congaree River at Thompson?s Plantation (Calhoun County). Matthew continued in the service for some time with Colonel Sumter in the south part of South Carolina. He was again taken prisoner by the British and was sent to Camden and confined as a prisoner until he obtained a parole from the British and returned to Chester. A short time after he returned home, peace was declared between the United States & the British government. After the peace was declared, he received, from the United States, about $60 for his services of about 10 months time. Mathew McClurken Pension File. S32403

Text:   MATHEW McCLURKIN
There is no Royal - called Bounty - grant for Matthew McClurkin, though the grant books in the office of the Secretary of State in Columbia, South Carolina, may have one recorded. Owing to the rush of business in the past years, it is difficult to find room to look at the large volumes containing the early grants and the office force does not have time to be bothered with ancients interested in things, past, these one hundred and fifty years. Their courtesy is perfect at all times, but it is wiser to wait a more convenient season.
In Deed Book F, p. 38, 1797, Chester Court House, is recorded a deed of Matthew McClurkin for sixty pounds Sterling paid Mary Doneley Extx. of Hugh Doneley dec'd, of South Carolina, Chester County a plantation containing one hundred acres of land. Situate in said county lying on a branch of Little Rocky creek granted to said Matthew McClurkin by his Excellency Wm. Moultrie the first day of January A.D. 1767 ... (regular form of deed)

In Deed Book F, p. 142-143, Nov. 27, 1792, is a deed "Between Matthew McClurkin and his wife Jenny of Chester County and state of South Carolina, and John McKee of county and state aforesaid, a certain grant bearing date of 20th day of Dec. A.D. 1762 under the hand of his Excellency Thos. Boone, Esqr. '" in and over the Province (now state) of South Carolina and signed by his Excellency WilliamSimpson Governor-in-Council for that purpose did give and grant unto Francis Penson a plantation or tract of land containing fifty acres. Situate and lying and being on a branch of Rocky creek, bounding S.E. on John Lee's land and on all other sides by vacant land. Francis Penson did sell and convey unto John Lee, and John Lee did give and bequeath unto Alexander Gordon and his wife Sarah Gordon by his last will and Testament, and said Gordon and his wife did sell and convey unto Matthew McClurkin for the sum of one hundred pounds Sterling paid by John McKee ... The family name of Jennet, first wife of Matthew McClurkin, is not known, though it is thought by a descendant to have been Jennet Chestnut. There were two Jennet Chestnuts in Chester County at that time; one became the second wife of the Rev. WiHiamMartin, the other, the daughter of David Chestnut and his wife, Jane Brown, married George Cherry before her father's will was drawn (Apt. 8, pkt. 122, April 22, 1778, will of David Chestnut says: "Also I give my Daughter Jennet, George Cherry's wife, ten shillings currancy." "-
In Deed Book N, p. 558, Nov. 9, 1803; recorded Mar. 1, 1809, Chester Court House, is a deed frorn Matthew McClurkin and Mary his wife (second wife) of Chester District, state of South Carolina for nine hundred dollars paid by the Rev. John Hemphill, a plantation or tract of land containing one hundred and fifty acres. Situate on a branch of Rocky creek being a part of four hundred acres originally granted to George Taylor, 2nd day of January, 1754, sold to John Lee, to Alexander Gordon and wife Sarah Gordon by will of John Lee, sold by Gordon to Matthew McClurkin Aug. 18, 1790 ...
