Wilhelm Eggebrecht

1861 – 1923

Wilhelm or William Eggebrecht was born in Prussia (Germany) in April of 1861. He came to the United States with his parents and sister, Augusta. They arrived in New York on June 1, 1866 on the ship, Freihandel, which had departed from Bremen, Germany. Their final destination was Chicago, Illinois. The details can be found on the Ship Passenger List.

 

His parents were Carl Eggebrecht and Wilhelminia Boldt Eggebrecht.

 

His siblings were:

·        Augusta was born in Prussia in April 1866.

·        Bertha was born in Chicago in April 1870.

·        Ida Henrietta was born in Chicago on March 7, 1872 and died on December 19, 1889. She is buried with her parents.

·        Robert was born on June 9, 1874 and died on June 13, 1941.

 

The 1869 Chicago City Directory shows that the family was living at 250 Orchard Street (currently this is 1961 N. Orchard).

 

The 1870 Census shows William, his parents and two sisters living in the 16th Ward.

 

The 1874, 1877 and 1878 Chicago City Directories show the house address was now 254 Orchard.

 

The 1880 Census shows William, his parents, sister, Henrietta, and brother, Robert, living at 254 Orchard. William was working in a broom factory.

 

The 1882, 1884, 1885 and 1887 Chicago City Directories show that the family was still living in the house at 254 Orchard.

 

His mother died on July 31,1888 and is buried in Graceland Cemetery, Section I, Lot 120, Grave 1.

 

His father died on November 22, 1888 and is buried in Graceland Cemetery, Section I, Lot 120, Grave 2.

 

When his father died, he left his property at 120 Howe Street (currently 1953 N. Howe) to William. The property at 254 Orchard was left to his brother, Robert, and his sister, Henrietta.

 

In 1891, William married Augusta Man (3/1862 – 10/17/1938).

 

The 1900 Census shows William and Augusta living at 120 Howe Street. William was a furniture varnisher.

 

The 1910 Census shows William and Augusta living at 1953 Howe Street. William was a finisher for a furniture manufacturer.

 

The 1920 Census shows William and Augusta living at 1953 Howe Street and William was a finisher.

 

William and died on January 10, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois.
