Harriet (Hattie) Louisa McClurken was born, near Oakdale, Illinois, on November 27, 1861. She died on June 12, 1942.
Her parents were Archibald Valentine McClurken (February 18, 1837 – November 4, 1862) and Elizabeth Auld (March 25, 1837 – August 29, 1915). They were married on October 5, 1859. When Harriet was less than a year old, her father, Archibald, died. He is buried in Oakdale Cemetery (Old Section, Row 3, Grave 59). When Harriet was six, on April 19, 1868, her mother married a widower named James Beall.
Harriet now had four older step siblings:
· Sarah was born about 1848 in Ohio.
· Mary was born about 1849 in Ohio.
· James was born about 1853 in Ohio.

(In the 1870 Census, Harriet is incorrectly identified as Emma). In January 7, 1871, James and Elizabeth had a child, Laura A. Beall. James died on December 28, 1872 and is buried in Oakdale Cemetery (Old Section, Row 3, Grave 60).
Shortly after Harriet’s 18th birthday, her guardianship was formally ended by the court. The majority of the funds were likely from her father’s, estate. In addition, when her grandfather, Thomas McClurken, died in 1867, Harriet’s guardian, her mother, accepted her father’s share of $112.56. After expenses, on December 16, 1879, Harriet received a check for $2,445.16. See Harriet McClurken Guardianship.pdf for the final accounting and expenses from May 1875 through December 1879. The guardianship documents indicate that Harriet spent September 1875 through June 1876 in St. Louis, purchased a $350 piano, took music lessons and took a Centennial trip. She also spent September 1876 through June 1877 in St. Louis.

On May 10, 1881, Harriet married James A Ramsey (January 16, 1856 – March 8, 1934). James and Harriet had three children:
