Pauline Julia Miller was born on May 11, 1860 in Memphis, Tennessee. She died in Los Angeles, California on October 23, 1943 and is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.

George Miller died in 1867. The 1870 Census shows Pauline, at 10, living in St. Louis with her mother and three siblings. Later in 1870, Pauline’s mother, Louisa, married Patrick Ryan. Patrick died in 1881. At some point, Pauline married Alfred O’Donnell. He was a tailor in St. Louis, Missouri; however, his residence was in Oakdale, Illinois. Sometime after 1900, they were divorced and Pauline was living alone. The 1906, 1907, 1908 and 1909 St Louis City Directories show Pauline living at 4657A Maryland Avenue. The 1910 City Directory shows Pauline at the same address but as the widow of Alfred.
The 1910 Census shows Pauline, at age 49, divorced and living with her mother at 396A Euclid Avenue. She was working outside the home as a piano teacher. In addition, she could speak German.
The 1912 City Directory shows Pauline living at 5739 Wells Avenue and also identified as the widow of Alfred. During part of 1906 and from 1908 through 1912, it has been confirmed that Pauline’s mother, Louisa, lived with her.
About 1913, Pauline married a wealthy individual named Edmund Rutledge. Subsequently, from 1914 through 1917, she employed her sister Julia’s husband, Luther Kemps, as a chauffer.
In 1916, when her brother, John W. Ryan, died, Pauline purchased a six grave lot in Valhalla Cemetery. In addition to John, Pauline’s brother, Albert, Albert’s wife and Pauline’s mother, Louisa, are buried in this lot. Two of the graves were never used.
In 1918, Pauline and Edmund moved to Chicago.

In 1921, Pauline moved to Los Angeles, California, possibly with Edmund. She lived in Los Angeles for twenty two years. The 1940 Census shows Pauline living at 906 3rd Avenue. At the time of her death, she was living at 4823 Carnegie Street.
Pauline Julia Miller O’Donnell Rutledge died on October 23, 1943 in Los Angeles, California and is buried in the Eventide Section, Lot 1272, Space 6 of Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California. For an image of the headstone, see this link. See her Death Certificate for additional details.
